Rattan furniture - The innate look

When manufacturing rattan furniture, many purposes are met, but the main intention is to provide an innate look to the place where the furniture is accommodated. Rattan furniture is manufactured with stripped stems of climbing rattans, known for their flexibility and strength, and their uniformity makes them ideal not only for rattan and wicker furniture manufacturing, but also for matting, cordage, basketry, thatching and construction.

Countries of manufacture

Today, there are many countries that manufacture rattan and outdoor rattan furniture. USA and European countries import the raw material and produce rattan furniture using sophisticated and technologically advanced procedures and processes. But a couple of centuries ago, the manufacturing took place only in countries where the raw material was available. About 70% of the world’s supply comes from Indonesia and there the availability of the rattan stems is distributed among the islands of Borneo, Sulawesi and Sumbawa. Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Bangladesh are some of the other countries that produce rattan stems. Since ages, the native people of these places cherish the manufacture of rattan furniture as their tradition.

Economic value

Instead of people felling trees in the forest, they can harvest rattan and use it for many of the applications that are otherwise met by tropical wood. The rattan is not only easier to harvest, it is simpler to transport and quick in its re-growth. In the countries of its manufacture, this furniture provides jobs and valuable foreign exchange.

Design and colour multiplicity

In the manufacture of rattan furniture, the peeled skin of rattan is used as the weaving material. The raw stem can be cut and used like wood, or formed into the shape that is required, by special processes, in the production of various designs. Excellent colour acceptance properties make the furniture available in many stains and colours.
